Requirements (Where to Disclose)

For AI used in scientific writing: declare in a separate statement placed after the Declaration of Interests section (end of manuscript). Must specify tool name, purpose, and confirm human review. Basic grammar/spelling/reference tools exempt. For AI used in research processes (data analysis, imaging): describe in the Methods section.

Reviewers and editors are not currently allowed to use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the peer review and manuscript evaluation process.

Exemptions

Basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, and references are exempt from declaration requirements.

Enforcement

No AI-generated or AI-altered images permitted. No AI for graphical abstracts. Cover art allowed case-by-case with prior editor permission only. Image processing must be minimal, transparent, and documented in figure legends. AI used in data analysis or research methods should be described in the Methods section; original unprocessed data must be available on request. Authors should check the Guide for Authors for their specific journal, as individual Cell Press titles may have additional requirements.
