AI Policy at a Glance

SIAM permits AI tool use across text, images/figures, and data with full disclosure in the Acknowledgements section. Light-touch use (spelling, grammar, style polishing) requires only a simple acknowledgement; any substantive use requires detailed disclosure including tool/version, prompts, the content changed or generated, and (where possible) the code or data to reproduce results. AI tools cannot be listed as authors. The editor has final discretion on whether a particular use is permitted.

Requirements (Where to Disclose)

AI tools used to edit or polish text for spelling, grammar, or general style require a simple acknowledgement in the Acknowledgements section. Any other use of AI/LLMs/similar technologies must be fully documented in the Acknowledgements section with: details of the specific model/tool and version (e.g., Tool = GPT-4, Date used: Sept 1, 2023); the exact method used (e.g., the prompt entered); the specific content changed or generated by AI, including text, citations, images, figures, videos, or similar; and where possible, the code or data needed to reproduce the results.

Template Language

This is sample language only. Always review the publisher’s specific disclosure requirements before submitting. Requirements vary and may change. BioRender is actively developing an automated disclosure workflow that will provide clarity to publishers on exactly how AI was used, if at all, on its platform and the degree to which it is copyright safe.

Additional Policy Details

Peer Review Restrictions

SIAM referees are not permitted to upload papers under review to ChatGPT or similar LLM models as this compromises the confidentiality of material provided by the author during the peer review process.

Enforcement

Listed authors must be human beings — AI tools cannot be authors because they cannot be accountable for the work, disclose conflicts of interest, or hold/assign copyright. The SIAM journal or book editor has final decision on whether the use of an AI tool is appropriate or permitted. Egregious misrepresentations from AI use may lead to investigation, rejection, limits on future submissions, notification of the authors' institutions, and addendum to or retraction of an already published article.
