AI Policy at a Glance
ASME prohibits using generative AI to create substantive content for journal submissions, including drafting text, generating data, conducting analysis, or drawing conclusions. AI Tools may be used to edit, translate, polish, or improve readability of author-created text with full disclosure. AI Tools may not be used to create or alter images or video in any form. AI may be used in original research design with detailed disclosure in Methods, including prompts, datasets, performance evaluation, and bias analysis. AI cannot be listed as an author.

Most AI policies require disclosure of AI use in your submission.
Requirements (Where to Disclose)
Authors must fully disclose any use of AI Tools at any stage. Disclosure must include: tool name (with version, manufacturer, access method), date(s) of use, a description of how AI was used and on which portions, and a statement confirming the author takes responsibility for the integrity of the generated content. For Original Research, additional Methods-section disclosure is required (prompts used, datasets, performance evaluation, bias analysis).

Additional Policy Details
Peer Review Restrictions
Peer reviewers are prohibited from submitting manuscript content to any AI Tools. Reviewers may only use AI Tools to improve their review language, and any such use must be fully disclosed in the submitted feedback.
Exemptions
Basic rules-based spell-check in word processing is not considered an AI Tool and is not subject to this policy.
Enforcement
ASME reserves the right to make the final determination of whether an AI Tool was used for substantive contributions. Non-compliant content will be rejected. AI-generated material that cannot be copyrighted will be rejected. Authors must hold valid licenses for any AI-Tool-generated or AI-Tool-modified material and provide evidence on request.
